CTC vs In-Hand - Why the Gap is 15 to 30%

Your CTC includes costs your company bears that never appear in your bank account. Employer PF (12% of basic, capped at 21,600 per year) and Gratuity provision (4.81% of basic) together reduce your effective gross salary by 15 to 17% at most CTC levels. Then Employee PF (12% of basic), Professional Tax (2,400 per year), and Income Tax (TDS) are deducted from what remains.

For example, on a 15L CTC with 50% basic structure under New Regime: CTC is 15L, gross salary is about 12.85L, employee deductions are about 1.38L, tax is about 49,000, and in-hand is approximately 11L per year or 91,700 per month. That is a 27% gap between CTC and in-hand.

FY 2026-27 Income Tax Slabs - New Regime

Under the New Tax Regime for FY 2026-27, the slabs are: up to 3L at 0%, 3L to 7L at 5%, 7L to 10L at 10%, 10L to 12L at 15%, 12L to 15L at 20%, and above 15L at 30%. A standard deduction of 75,000 is available. Section 87A rebate eliminates tax if taxable income is 12L or below. Education cess is 4% on tax payable.

Under the Old Tax Regime: up to 2.5L at 0%, 2.5L to 5L at 5%, 5L to 10L at 20%, above 10L at 30%. Standard deduction is 50,000. Allows 80C (1.5L), HRA, 80D, NPS (50K extra), and home loan interest (2L) deductions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Typically 70 to 85% of CTC is your in-hand salary depending on your CTC level, tax regime, PF enrollment, and deductions claimed. For a 10L CTC under New Regime with PF, expect around 77 to 80% as take-home. For 20L CTC, this drops to 68 to 72% due to higher tax slabs.
HRA is typically 50% of basic for metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) and 40% for non-metro cities. The exemption in Old Regime is the minimum of: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic, or 50%/40% of basic. This exemption is not available in New Regime.
Surcharge applies on income above 50L (10% surcharge) and above 1 Cr (15% surcharge). The calculator applies standard tax rates for most salary ranges. If your CTC is above 50L, add surcharge manually or consult a CA for precise computation.
PF contribution is 12% of basic salary, capped at a maximum of 1,800 per month (21,600 per year) for both employee and employer when basic salary exceeds 15,000 per month. If basic is below 15,000, PF applies to the full basic amount.
Yes. Most companies include a gratuity provision of approximately 4.81% of basic salary in the CTC. This amount is only paid out after 5 years of continuous employment. It is part of your CTC but you never see it in your monthly salary. Our calculator excludes it from your take-home calculation.
No. This calculator is designed specifically for salaried employees with a formal CTC structure. Freelancers and consultants are taxed under different provisions (presumptive taxation under 44ADA) and do not have PF, HRA, or standard deduction in the same way. Consult a CA for freelance tax calculations.
